Billionaire Larry Ellison Pays $173M for Billionaire Jim Clark’s Florida Home—Nearly Double the Latter’s Purchase Price a Year Ago

The former Ziff family estate on the East Coast of Florida has sold once again. The Palm Beach-area property was acquired by Jim Clark — who co-founded Netscape — last March. Clark paid $94 million for the place, buying it apparently on a whim; he told The Wall Street Journal it was a “spur of the moment purchase.” But he ended up staying in New York, so he passed on the home this month to another tech billionaire: Larry Ellison.

Clark’s purchase last year brought to a close a protracted marketing effort that began in 2015, when the compound appeared for sale with a $200 million asking price. Before Clark came along with his offer, the property had been facing a possible subdivision. The stretch of tropical flora and beachfront in Manalapan measures about sixteen acres. Larry Ellison’s more recent purchase of the estate came at a figure that registers as somewhat nearer to the original 2015 ask: $173 million.

Ellison’s no stranger to this corner of Florida: last year, he shelled out $80 million for a little spread in Palm Beach. But his Sunshine State acquisitions, impressive though they may be, are far from the priciest items in his residential trophy case. Back in 2012, he paid a cool $300 million to acquire 98% of the Hawaiian island of Lanai, which now serves as his home base.

The latest addition to his portfolio, which was titled Gemini and built by William Bernhard Ziff, Jr., is anchored by a main house with 62,000 sq. ft. of interiors and twelve bedrooms. But additional residences on the property bring the accommodations count to 33 bedrooms and around 40 baths; supporting homes on the Gemini estate include Mango House, a seven-bedroom retreat in the jungle, and two cottages with four bedrooms each. An apartment building for the staff required to run the estate is positioned a judicious distance from the lifestyle concerns of the owners and their guests. A media room, libraries, offices, a fitness center, a tennis court, and PGA golf are among the amenities.

Gemini’s beachfront comes in at about 2,500 feet total, with 1,200 feet on the Atlantic side and 1,300 on Lake Worth, where a dock and pier stand ready for boating excursions.

Forbes estimated the Ziff family’s net worth at $15 billion in 2020; their fortune was made in the magazine business.

Clark’s worth is around $3 billion. He and Marc Andreessen developed Netscape, a pioneering 1990s web browser that introduced groundbreaking technology still in use today. His net worth is around $3 billion.

Ellison is co-founder—and CTO—of tech heavyweight Oracle. His net worth is around $94 billion.More info

Billionaire Google Co-Founder Sergey Brin Bought Pink’s Former Malibu Retreat for $13.5M

Billionaire Google Co-Founder Sergey Brin Bought Pink’s Former Malibu Retreat for $13.5M

Published: June 21, 2022 | By: American Luxury Staff

Sergey Brin, co-founder of a little tech company called Google, ponied up a bit of pocket change for an appealing contemporary in Malibu’s Point Dume area a couple of years ago.

The tech exec’s new pad in the exclusive neighborhood has a unique history: it was, early in the last decade, owned by pop star Pink, who owned it with her husband Carey Hart. The couple bought the place for $12 million in 2010, and put it up for sale at $14 million about five years later. They eventually accepted an offer of $12.5 million for the residence in 2016. The summer of 2020 found the property changing hands again, with Brin paying $13.5 million for the keys, according to Dirt.

The 2005-built home’s architecture voices chalet, modern, and Balinese influences. Details at work in the house include beamed, tongue-and-groove and plank ceilings, fieldstone support columns, series clerestories, and scraped hardwood plank and flagstone floors.

The living areas meander throughout a series of levels, a design style which encourages exploration. Balinese details include carved wood, doors, and ceiling fans in a tropical style. The house contains five bedrooms and seven baths; the master bedroom receives on of the several fieldstone fireplaces in the house. Each is unique, and each anchors the room it is in.

The 6,300 square-footer comes deeded with access to Little Dume Beach and its coveted break.

Pink’s other Malibu real estate dealings of late include a beach house listing. The 3,606 sq. ft. modern, which was custom-built in the 1970s for crooner Barry Manilow, returned to the open market with a $14 million asking price earlier this spring and was scooped up in short order.

Brin’s net worth is around $90 billion, per Forbes; Bloomberg pegs it closer to $100 billion.More info

5 Ways To Design A Home That’s Fit For Royalty

The phrase “your majesty” is used when addressing a queen or a king. But why not apply it to your home? By designing your space with the right decor, a residence can become your majesty — a regal retreat whose stately opulence and dignified flair makes you feel noble.

What does it take to design a property fit for a monarch? As high-end homeowners rediscover the comfort and cachet of the royal aesthetic, here’s a curated lookbook to help you envision a castle of your own.

Maximalism From the Birthplace of Baroque

Paris is a city of palaces. A casual stroll through the streets of the capital takes you past a dazzling display of some of the world’s finest imperial architecture — the Grand Palais des Champs-Élysées, the Palais du Luxembourg, the Palais de Justice and its neighbor, the iconic Louvre.

Iryna Kakura – Propriétés Parisiennes Sotheby’s International Realty

So a private 19th century mansion and garden in the center of Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré is as legitimate as it gets when imagining your own royal quarters. This apartment exhibits a host of first-class furnishings, from the botanical motifs in the wallpaper to its lush courtyard and plush salon. Exotic touches that border ever-so-slightly on excess are a signature of classic royal style. So too is architectural magnificence, as evidenced by this home’s polished checkered floors and four-meter ceilings.

A Country Estate Kitchen Fit For a Royal Feast

The Academy Award-nominated Spencer is one of many recent films and television shows that have restored royal residences to prominence in the popular imagination. But while the Princess Diana-inspired drama does provide an exquisite portrait of Sandringham House, many of its most intriguing detours take the audience into the expansive country kitchen.

Tim Salm – Jameson Sotheby’s International Realty

This impeccable downtown Chicago property creates a strikingly similar impression. Parlors filled with antique accents and foyers fitted with coffered ceilings lead to one of the property’s most remarkable features — a wood-paneled kitchen at the back of the home. From the beautiful exposed beams to the full La Cornue range, it’s like you’re getting a glimpse inside the functional quarters of one of Europe’s great historic estates.

Take Comfort In Rich Colors and Soft Textures

Another defining characteristic of traditional castles is dramatic drapery woven from fabrics such as velvet, satin, and lace. These create densely-decorated domains, made even cozier by elegant furniture and extravagant rugs. Deep jewel tones are among the colors properly befitting a sovereign’s sanctuary.

Isabella Masserini – Italy Sotheby’s International Realty

These trends are on display in this stunning villa overlooking Lake Varese and the Italian Alps. This home is almost museum-like in its preservation of authentic paintings, paneling, tapestries, mirrors, and mantles from notable residences. The Tea Room and Monumental Library come from an 18th-century English villa, while the Napoleonic Room takes its artwork, boiserie, and stucco from a renowned Parisian manor and the primary suite is furnished with pieces from a 17th-century French castle.

Illuminate Your Living Space, and Go For Gold

While rich, dense colors may be a hallmark of historic royalty, so too are pristine white spaces with gold accents. The relative minimalism of this palette can be augmented with chandeliers and antique lighting fixtures that further brighten the space, as well as salon-style art hangings that add visual vitality.

Beverly J. Cole – Sotheby’s International Realty – East Side Manhattan Brokerage

This French Renaissance-style townhouse offers its owners a grand foyer and staircase that doubles as a picture gallery. Monarchical lineages go back generations, and many royal homes honor family and history through collections of portraits and heirlooms. That aesthetic is perfectly captured in this rare relic of the aptly-named Gilded Age on New York’s Upper East Side.

Regal Residences Require Regal Landscaping

Interior design is essential to a personal royal residence, but castles, palaces, and historic estates are equally renowned for their green spaces. Manicured gardens, fabulous fountains, meticulously maintained hedge sculptures, and private woodlands are all classic features of a royal landscape.

Richard Klug – Sotheby’s International Realty – Beverly Hills Brokerage

There’s no shortage of royal landscapes among the mansions of Beverly Hills, but few can compare with this nearly 10-acre property. With its vast sports courts, well-tended walking trails, and picturesque children’s maze, the external view of this gated residence is the very image of a ruler’s court. Forget about a pool house — this home boasts a pool pavilion that functions as a luxury retreat for two, along with a gorgeous coral-colored guesthouse.

Royalty are the original luxury icons, and their residences continue to inspire high-end design and decor to this day. Indulge yourself, and embrace a style that’s as elegant and timeless as the traditions that inform it.

World Series Champion Ryan Zimmerman Lists Virginia Home for $8.5M

Former Washington Nationals stalwart Ryan Zimmerman—who played 16 seasons with the team—listed his secluded oasis in Virginia for sale on the open market recently. The retired MLB first baseman is asking $8.5 million for the six-bedroom, nine-bath estate, which sits on a bucolic 5-acre parcel in Great Falls.

With its hipped roofline, stone accents and board and batten shutters, the house appears to suggest a bit of French provincial; its setting, a green expanse of lawn, landscaping and mature trees, makes the ideal context for the 13,232 sq. ft. home. In back, where the home’s indoor living spaces give way to a natural stone patio and pool area, a water wheel is used to enhance the French countryside feel.

Inside, the home is similarly affecting. Beamed ceilings finished in plank, warm off-white paint, plank and herringbone-pattern floors, a stone fireplace accent wall, and plentiful glass are among the details; tips of the hat to tradition include panoramic wall covering in the dining room, and a breakfast alcove with a window seat.

Emma Stone Offering Malibu Perch for $4.3M

Emma Stone Offering Malibu Perch for $4.3M

Published: May 21, 2022 | By: American Luxury Staff

In the final weeks of last year, actress Emma Stone completed a residential real estate sale in New York. The closing brought to an end a process that had started in 2018, but it registered as a loss for Stone, who was in for $2.4 million in 2016 and out in 2021 for $2.25 million.

Hoping for a better turnout this time, Stone has turned to the other coast, and put the single-level 1958-built traditional she purchased in 2015 up for sale. She’s asking $4.295 million for the 1,764 sq. ft. home, which sits on a large lot on a bluff overlooking the ocean.

Surely 3.15 acres in Malibu will sell this property. The space is occupied by decades-old red brick walkways and superb landscaping, and culminates at the edge of the incline with a brick firepit overlook.

The three-bedroom home’s interiors are rather different from the interiors of Stone’s previous Los Angeles-area home. That house, a 3,900 square-footer in Beverly Hills which the actress sold last year for its asking price — $3.9 million — was dressed up in full kitsch regalia, or close to it.

Here, the emphasis is on a meditative brightness, and stark white dominates the interiors to keep the photons bouncing about; bringing in additional natural light is a series of skylights throughout the house, with the shared living area outfitted with around half a dozen for an especially sun-drenched living style.

The bedrooms, too, are flooded with sunlight when Apollo’s in ascendancy and the heavens are amenable; corner glass and modern series clerestories grace the master.

Stone’s upcoming projects include Poor Things, with Willem Dafoe, Ramy Youssef, and Mark Ruffalo. A Cruella sequel may also be in the cards. More info For more information, contact Eric Lavey of Sotheby’s International Realty

MLB Star Cody Bellinger’s Airpark Home in Arizona Flies Off the Market at $3.5M

Published: May 10, 2022 | By: American Luxury Staff

Pro baseball player Cody Bellinger both pitched a sale and rounded for home in the past few months. The MLB outfielder and Dodgers’ first baseman set his sights on a Scottsdale home late last year, and closed on it in December for $4.25 million. A listing for his existing residence in the Grand Canyon State followed in short order; in the middle of February, the suburban mixed architectural in Chandler went up for sale at $3.999 million and was gone again within weeks. The final sale price was $3.525 million.

The Scottsdale property offers four bedrooms across 5,679 sq. ft. of interiors as well as an airpark lifestyle. The home in Chandler is located in an appealing suburban area and features a towering covered double-door entry, a transitional living area with a fireplace and kitchen out back, and interiors that blend details as diverse as barn doors, a hardwood coffered ceiling, tile in various patterns, modern lines, backlit built-ins, and floors that mix stone tile and plank.

Pocketing glass opens the back of the home to the backyard living area from at least three rooms. A pool with water jets and a companion spa dominates the outdoor R&R HQ.
