The grand Manhattan townhouse that was once Gianni Versace’s New York residence is for sale. The property surfaced on the open market this spring, and is being sold by former hedge fund manager Thomas Sandell. The asking price is $70 million.

The building, which is situated a hop, skip and jump from Central Park, dates to 1901. It features a limestone exterior with neoclassical architecture. Inside the house, an unusually layered and intense opulence is established from the entrance gallery — with decorative marble half-columns and a water feature — and rarely lets up as one moves deeper into it. In the entry to another floor, details include red and black marble columns and pedestals, a marble staircase with treads covered in leopard-print carpet, and an inlaid floor with meandros — a motif that pops up elsewhere in the home, most notably in the tub alcove in the master bath — and multi-colored marble tiles.

Other surprises uncovered on a pictorial tour of the 35-foot-wide townhouse include a Moroccan-themed lounge with a dramatic roof lantern, a living room with an ornate frescoed ceiling, a billiards room with red slag glass sconces and porthole windows, and a formal dining room with a French-style marble fireplace surround and matching sconces and chandelier.

Outdoor spaces on the property include a rooftop deck with a gazebo, and a garden level landscaped patio with a water feature.

Sandell’s net worth is north of $1 billion.More infoFor more information, contact Nikki Field and Amanda Jordan of Sotheby’s International Realtyhttps://www.google.com/recaptcha/api2/anchor?ar=1&k=6LezWA0TAAAAAN5Z9sABHhRNnDeqysKnhy0CSG6P&co=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuYW1sdS5jb206NDQz&hl=en&v=nEGwmCAyCoKVn9PSwAGnQWhY&size=normal&cb=uyx73mxkrrluSend
