Albemarle County Schools
Albemarle County Schools are organized to provide opportunities for each student to achieve the highest level of intellectual, social, and vocational skills consistent with capabilities, aptitudes, and interests.
Albemarle County Schools are governed by a seven-member appointed school board (434-296-5820), representing six magisterial districts and one at-large seat. The system is a financially dependent division. Of the total budget, 57% comes from the County Board of Supervisors, 34% from Commonwealth of Virginia.

Albemarle County Public Schools are administered by a superintendent, an administrative assistant to the superintendent, three assistant superintendents, and directors for student learning, federal programs, special education, and instructional technology.
Composition
The school division is composed of 13 elementary schools (K-5), 4 middle schools (6-8), and 2 high schools (9-12).
Calendar and Hours
Albemarle County Schools begin each year the day after Labor Day; a school calendar is available. School hours are:
Elementary
Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Middle
- Burley - Monday through Friday, 8:45 a.m. to 3:05 p.m.
- Henley - Monday through Friday, 8:55 a.m. to 3:15 p.m.
- Jack Jouett - Monday through Friday, 8:55 a.m. to 3:15 p.m.
- Walton - Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 3:50 p.m.
High School
Monday through Friday, 8:50 a.m. to 3:25 p.m. (some early morning classes available, 7:45 a.m.)

Programs of Study
The school division offers information describing programs at the elementary level (296-5883). A high school program of studies is available (296-5813) that explains each course, including instructional objectives, materials, and requirements. Guidance instructors are available to help with planning of concentrations, such as mathematics, foreign languages, agriculture, etc. For additional information about specific programs, call the individual school.
Curriculum Options and Credit Requirements
After successful completion of course work in grades kindergarten through eighth, a student may choose one of two courses of study to fulfill high school graduation requirements:
- general studies diploma (21credits)
- advanced course of study (23 credits)
Testing
Annual Testing - The following are given annually:
- Grade 1 Cognitive Abilities Test
- Grade 2 Locally developed test
- Grade 4 Iowa Tests
- Grade 6 Literacy Testing of Proficiency Grade 11 TAP Test
Arts
Choral music instruction begins in the fourth grade and continues through high school where an awards winning program includes marching and concert bands, orchestra and chorus. Drama and visual arts are also available.
Sports
A wide variety of sports is available for both mate and female students. At the middle schools, non-competitive sports are available in after-school programs. High school sports include football, field hockey, track, cross country, soccer, golf, basketball, cheerleading, wrestling, volleyball, baseball, softball, tennis, and lacrosse. School buses provide transportation throughout the county with special services for disabled students and transportation for field trips.
Food

Albemarle County Schools have a coordinated food service program and participate in federally funded food service programs. Lunch is served in all schools and breakfast in Brownsville, Murray, Scottsville, Stone Robinson, and Yancey.
Health
Elementary schools are served by visiting health nurses. Health services are available at each high school, administered by a full-time nurse.
